More of Melbourne art, graffiti, architecture, cafes and wally

free falling!

I think I've read about this somewhere, forgot the architect's name....outdoor swimming pool on the top floor of a building. One minute you are swimming, staring at the tiles on the bottom of the swimming pool, and then a second later, you are peering at the people walking past on the pavement, 4 or 5 storeys below you. There is a similar swimming pool design next to that massive church at town hall station, but I think it's the entire pool where the base is glass.
*edit* design by international Australian firm DCM. (thx Nikki)

gelitin

hmm..didn't think blogging would be so time consuming. Took alotalota photos in Melbourne, probably post more later, had the best time there. Anyways, this is the Klunk Garden by Gelitin in Tokyo. It's like their growing from this Zen like rock garden....or buried in it

Melbourne!

Union Lane, Melbourne. That's Nikki.
Went to Melbourne for a bit, met up with friends. Much needed break, was so fun, there's always something to do there, always something new to discover. I think it's much more chill and slow paced there compared to Sydney, more..stop to smell the flowers, sit and enjoy the sun sorta place...but then again, could feel like that because we on holidays now...... seems like there is more art and creativity there as well! Like saw all this graffiti that blew my mind, and all these arty markets, and cafes and bars where the interior all pre-planned, well thought out and whatnot. Or maybe I just don't get out enough in Sydney?

shhhhhhhhhhhh.....

Just googled Union Lane, and came across this image...oh it was sunny nearly everyday there
ice cream sort of weather .

Forgot the name of the building but was looking for a sneaker store, and came across this. The long tube things are for air ventilation for the building, to cool it down.

This was by far my favourite graffiti wall! Don't know how planned it was but it looks like alot of people collaborated. Can't really stand tagging, just makes a mess of everything. It's like they don't know what else to do so they just scribble their name everywhere. Are they tagging for the sake of tagging, because they have nothing else to say or show? Althought graffiti is all about making everything up on the spot, I like the thought out stuff, stickers, stencils, images, portraits and all that, although I'm sure some people make it up as they go along.

Saw the Architecture Masters Graduate Exhibition in Melbourne Uni... was very impressed!!! Presentation and all the work they put into it.... and saw some 2D relief as well! we did this in first year uni, they just showing us how it should be done:

Markets!

Went to heaps of markets there, the best was definetely the Rose Street Artists Market, because everything is so crafty and hand made. Bought something from this guy Neil Thomas, who made this food turning thing for the cafe there. way to promote! He does it full time and everything, and super talkative and friendly. I guess the one's with the best business are the ones who know how to make conversation and keep the customers entertained. (and of course have some skill)
Hello Sailor Market
All the oldskool vintage stuff was sold here, don't think we bought anything here though. They closed down a bar and used two levels for the sellers and their stuff. People were sipping bloody mary's while browsing. Good idea. Don't know about bloody mary's though...vodka, tomato juice and tobasco sauce!!! never tried it, but sounds.......................interesting...
Camberwell Market
The whole thing is open air and it's a massive space because it's held in a carpark. Quite a range of stalls, some people selling their old junk, saw these nice laser cut rings, fruits, art, vegetables, plants, clothes, crafty jewellery, second hand books, big ass boots, and heaps of other stuff. Oh there was this one dude selling (or trying to sell) vintage uniform hats, should have taken a photo.

My friend bought some rosemary and mint for her mum. Mint reminds me of when i was a little kid, picking the mint leaves and eating them out of my neighbours garden.
Fed Square

This is where we ate churros and fell asleep...

I think this is inside the NGV (National Gallery of Victoria) which is at Federation Square
Took more notice of all the architecture in Melbourne this trip because I was staying with a friend who just graduated from Melbourne Uni, with a Bachelor of Architectural Studies. This is her favourite building. or one of them. i think.

Took sooooooooooooo many photos, i think this one is from the art gallery, where there was this talkative security guard, Don. Whipped out his little notepad to show us what he does while waiting for rotation (when they changed rooms), had some ballpoint drawings from the different paintings he stands by everyday. Very inspirational. He said there are like 60,000 years of art or something...was talking about his favourite artists of all time..man he knows so much

4th years major projects

Saw the 4th years final presentations today, impressive CRAAAZYYY awesome hectic stuff, some of the projects look like 2 years worth of work when in actual fact, they were less than a year's worth of work - research, model-making, user-testing, renderings, tech-drawings, costing, marketing etc etc etc, all tied together!! Don't know how they are able to do that to such a high standard! Lots of technology was included in the designs, some of them sounded like they had an extensive background in electrical engineering or something. I wonder how many of them took that electrical engineering elective, if any at all. I definetely have a looooooong way to go..need to practice =.="

Was definitely good for us to watch the presentations, although I was nervous for them when they were getting interrogated, especially when some of the questions threw the student off course and answers were like hmmm..then i was sweating buckets.. but I think for sure some of the designs will be noticed by professionals in the upcoming exhibition, and will hopefully be entered in the upcomingDyson Awards! more "presos" tmw...

Una Burke

SO ODD! BUT SO COOL! Looks like she is mummified, all bandaged up, or like a cocoon with another skin, trying to evolve and crawl out. It's about the cause, effect and healing stages of human trauma. It's made out of leather and studs.

would be funny trying to get into- would have to pin every single strip together.

My knockbox has arrived in the mail! and i like the packaging and graphics. i nearly always like packaging when they print directly onto the brown paper box. eco. includes instructions on how to use collected coffee grinds as natural fertilizer for the garden.
cute website too: www.dreamfarm.com.au

A tattoo artist and illustrator laser cuts dollar bills and pieces them together to create beautiful reliefs. I wonder how many dollar bills make up each piece...

Would ave thought lasercutting this intricately would catch fire or burn up at least, maybe he had to mask it or something...Must have been so fiddly doing this one, probably would have torn HEAPS..but well worth it!! Just read somewhere that this one is 100 deep stacks of 1 dollar bills // w00t!

Banana leaf packaging!!

Biodegradable and disposable..user tears banana leaf along its natural perforation to open it. Die-cut to the right shape and pinned together to hold in place.
