folding

Currently looking at folding techniques, since the difficulty with making bak chang is the wrapping of the leaves. Came across Benjamin Hubert magazine racks that look like pieces of paper folded up like origami.

It's actually powder coated steel. Really nice architectural folds.

From Nailchick27. Imagine the grime these talons would collect. eugh.

rant on trains.

Maybe don't read this post.

We were talking about public transport in Sydney today in Design Theory. As everyone knows, the train system here is overpriced, and for the amount that we are paying, we expect to be provided a good service, but the system is inefficient and pretty much...garbage. If you are a couple minutes late, you're screwed, as the next train is in 15 minutes, hence putting you further back in those long as bus queues. Just to slow things down even more, we're still using paper tickets, creating long ques at train stations and bus stops - to buy tickets and to get in and out of stations. And just in case we aren't annoyed enough, the trains close on weekends every couple of months for the past...how many years? but I guess that is for 'trackwork'... . Thought maybe my expectations are too high, but was lookin round and stuff, and came across this article: http://redracer.wordpress.com/2007/03/23/its-official-sydney-has-the-worlds-worst-trains/ guess it don't get much worse? oh wait. msia. hmmmm..

Making macarons (not macaroons!)

Next assignment is 'diningdesign'. About food culture - cooking, preparing, serving and dining.
Soooooo i will probably do something about malaysian food culture

Here is a Japanese chef with lightning fast hands. He's a machine!!!!!!! Every single piece has to be perfectly aligned with each other, with the same amount for each blob, so that when they change shape in the oven they don't merge and all that. Looks fun to do but mad concentration required

Trying to think of what in Malaysian/Singapore culture works this fast with the hands and all that ... should have spent more time in grandma's kitchen...all i can think of is the kueh...mmmm

So creepy!

I wonder if the designers for these carnival type games intentionally portray clowns as scary characters, for that creepy horror movie feeling...

The MyPressi Twist

In an earlier post about coffee culture, zxw commented about this portable espresso machine, that I only discovered a couple minutes ago. It's awesome, very convenient, except that in their websites video demonstration, everyone just ends up drinking the espresso straight, which is probably less common here in Australia, so I guess it would be a bonus when they incorporate a steamer or frother into it...... For now, I guess you would have to buy a portable milk frother to go along with it...or just get used to short blacks!

Nevertheless it is definitely very clever and convenient. From a gigantic machine to something that can be carried in your bag! Why is it called the "Twist"? Because there is a twist between the handle and the machine? hmmmmm.... or maybe because you have to twist the top to open it. hmm...

It uses gas cartridges, (the same thing that powers BB guns), meaning no power external power is needed. Just a trigger is hidden on the handle, which is held down for the pressure to force the water through the filter basket. (Oh and another tiny annoyance is that the water you put through it has to be hot...O.O )

The Ultimate Mural artist

To spend all that time and effort into creating something so awesome, and then to supposedly 'destroy it'...repetitively, would have been painful for me...then again, they got an awesome video clip out of it..... I'm wondering if they left each mural there for a long period of time before covering over it and moving onto the next one, so that many people could see their creation LIVE...
